About BMS Scholarship
BMS Scholarship helps outstanding bachelor’s graduates enter a Master’s-to-PhD pathway at the Berlin Mathematical School, offering scholarship-supported Phase I places for the 2027 intake. The BMS Scholarship targets applicants who will complete a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics by summer 2027 and need funding to continue into doctoral research.
The scholarship is offered by the Berlin Mathematical School, a joint doctoral pathway across Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin, with links to the MATH+ Cluster of Excellence and access to supervisors across these institutions.

BMS Scholarship Requirements
- Students who will have completed a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics by summer 2027 can apply to Phase I
- Phase I entry: Bachelor’s graduates
- Phase II entry: Master’s graduates
- Phase II admission requires applicants to secure funding for at least three years
Application Date and Process
- Choose Phase I or Phase II first.
- Identify your mathematical research interests and match them with BMS/MATH+ research areas.
- Prepare your academic transcripts and degree certificates.
- Write a focused statement of purpose explaining why BMS and Berlin fit your research direction.
- Prepare your research-interest statement or proposal where required.
- Arrange two reference letters from academics who can evaluate your mathematical ability.
- Provide English-language evidence if required.
- Submit by December 1, 2026 if you need a Phase I scholarship.
- If applying without BMS funding, use the second-round deadline of April 1, 2027.
- Phase II applicants should also actively investigate supervisors and funded PhD vacancies rather than waiting for BMS alone to find financing.
