About Biozentrum PhD Fellowships

The Biozentrum PhD Fellowships Program 2026-27 in Switzerland offers exceptionally talented young researchers from around the world the chance to pursue doctoral studies in molecular life sciences at the University of Basel. Selected candidates join the Biozentrum Basel International PhD Program through a rigorous competitive process, with a maximum of 10 successful candidates per year.

These fellowships are sponsored by the Werner Siemens Foundation and the University of Basel. They provide direct access to the PhD program at the Biozentrum, additional financial support, a rotation-based research group selection process, and assistance for attending scientific meetings and courses during the PhD.

Biozentrum PhD Fellowships Requirements

  • Candidates from all around the world are eligible to apply for the Basel Fellowships. 
  • They must be interested in the field of Life Sciences. 
  • Moreover, candidates must have a biomedical or  biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and/or computer science background. 
  • Candidates must hold or expect to obtain a university degree that qualifies them for entry into a PhD program at the University of Basel. This degree is typically at the Master’s (MSc or equivalent) level. 
  • In exceptional cases, outstanding students with a four-year bachelor’s degree, typically from outside the Bologna System, may also apply for a fast-track Master’s program at the University of Basel as part of their fellowship. 
  • To be eligible for the fellowship, candidates can neither be enrolled as PhD students at the University of Basel nor have signed a PhD working contract at the University of Basel at the decision date of the respective fellowship call. 
  • All selected candidates will have to undertake research in at least two labs (rotations) at the Biozentrum.
