About AFSA African Food Baskets Country Researchers Program
The African Food Baskets Country Researchers Program 2026 is an initiative by the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) to document, preserve, and promote the continent's rich food heritage. The program aims to select ten Country Researchers from across Africa to document traditional and contemporary food knowledge, including foods, dishes, beverages, recipes, menus, food sources, stories, proverbs, and other forms of cultural knowledge connected to food. The selected researchers will work with communities and local knowledge holders to document their country's food heritage, contributing to a continental resource that supports advocacy, education, research, communication, and policy engagement.
Benefits of AFSA African Food Baskets Country Researchers Program
- Each selected researcher will receive USD 1,000 as facilitation for the assignment.The payment will be made after AFSA accepts the complete country data package. The facilitation is intended to cover the researcher’s time, local travel, communication and community engagement costs.
AFSA African Food Baskets Country Researchers Program Requirements
Applicants should:
- Be a national of, or resident and actively working in, the country they are applying to document.
- Have a background in research, preferably in food systems, agriculture, agroecology, nutrition, anthropology, sociology, development studies, environmental studies, cultural heritage or a related field.
- Have practical experience in qualitative fieldwork, community interviews or participatory documentation.
- Be able to work in English, French or Portuguese and communicate in the main local language of the communities concerned, or arrange reliable interpretation.
- Have access to a smartphone, tablet or computer and be willing to learn KoboToolbox.
- Have experience with KoboToolbox or similar mobile data collection tools as an advantage.
- Be able to take clear, well-composed photographs of foods, dishes and food environments, or work with someone who can.
- Be available for the full assignment period.

Women researchers, young researchers and researchers working directly with indigenous peoples, pastoralists, fisherfolk and forest communities are particularly encouraged to apply.
Application Date and Process
Applicants should submit the following in one email:
- A CV of no more than two pages, including at least two referees.
- A country concept note of no more than three pages explaining the proposed communities or food territories, reasons for their selection, knowledge holders to be engaged, consent approach and fieldwork plan.
- One example of previous relevant work, such as a report, article, thesis chapter or documentation product.
- Where applicable, the name of the AFSA member organisation with which the applicant is affiliated.
