Emory University Scholar Requirements

  •  All citizens of foreign countries who are not permanent residents of the United States (living in the US or abroad) will be considered for these opportunities.

  • Submission of all required application materials by November 15 (or November 1 for Early Decision I)
  • Answer “yes” to the question regarding merit scholarship consideration on the application.

Required Materials

In addition to these requirements, International applicants must meet all first-year admission requirements and demonstrate English proficiency and financial capability and other documentation as follows:

  • English Proficiency Requirements: Applicants whose primary language is not English must show proficiency in written and spoken English through TOEFL iBT or iBT Home Edition (100), C1 on the TOEFL ITP, IELTS 7.5, DuoLingo 130, or other approved tests below:

  • SAT: 700+ Evidence-based Reading and Writing score
  • ACT: 30+ English subset score
  • International Curriculum: Competitive curricula include International Baccalaureate (IB), Advanced Placement (AP), and British A-Levels. Other national systems are also recognized as strong preparation. Contact your regional admission officer with specific questions or check this link for approved international curricula by country.

  • Financial Aid for International Students: Need-based financial aid is available for a select group of international students each year. Applicants for financial assistance must submit accurate financial documentation.

International students must provide proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses, such as a bank statement or financial institution note. Those applying for financial aid should complete the Documentation of Finances accurately.

  • US Immigration: Admitted students should wait for visa documents before traveling. All international students must register as full-time students each semester, except for summer. A valid passport or official travel document is required.

  • Insurance: Medical insurance is mandatory. Enrolled international students are automatically included in Emory’s Accident and Sickness Insurance plan unless they have equivalent coverage.

Additional Materials: You can upload additional materials, such as resumes or digital portfolios, through the Emory applicant portal. Mailed materials, such as printed books and CDs, are not accepted; however, digital submissions are encouraged.

What More Does Emory Look For?

  • Emory seeks a collaborative spirit. Students worldwide must share Emory’s cooperative spirit and aim to make a positive impact, big and small.
  • Academic Preparation: The University values students who challenge themselves academically. Strong grades in advanced courses are important, though standardized test scores are optional.
  • Recommendation Letters: Teachers can provide insights into your character and resilience. Ask for recommendations from teachers in both your strong and challenging courses.
  • Personal Statements and Essays: Show the University who you are. Emory seeks intellectual curiosity, engagement with the world, and a strong individual voice. Choose a meaningful topic and proofread your work carefully.
  • Extracurricular Involvement: The University values students who contribute to their community. Share your involvement in clubs, sports, jobs, family responsibilities, research, or community service and how you’ll engage with the Emory community and beyond.
