The Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation offers predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships annually in support of projects and research initiatives that will advance the study of the art of the Spanish Americas.
Marilynn Thoma Fellowship in Art of the Spanish Americas
Supports predoctoral and postdoctoral scholars.
Only unrestricted U.S. research funding devoted exclusively to art of the Spanish Americas.
Open to scholars from any discipline, but projects must relate to art and art history.
Preference for projects on painting and sculpture in viceregal South America.
Awards:
Predoctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship: $50,000 (1 year).
Postdoctoral Research Fellowship: $65,000 (1–2 years), for PhDs conferred between 2015–2025.
Research & Travel Awards
Annual grants for scholars, curators, art historians, and advanced graduate students.
Designed to defray costs of research-related expenses.
Grants up to $25,000 for projects lasting up to six months.
Pre-doctoral applicants:
Must be at least 21 years old.
Enrolled in an accredited doctoral program in Art History, History, Architectural History, Religion, or related fields.
Post-doctoral applicants:
Must hold a PhD conferred between 2015–2025.
All applicants:
Must conduct research in both English and Spanish.
Project must focus on painting or sculpture in the Art of the Spanish Americas (not decorative arts, manuscripts, or maps).
Cannot apply on behalf of organizations or be affiliated with the Thoma Foundation (employees, board members, immediate family, etc.).
Completed application form.
Project abstract (max 300 words).
Project proposal (max 5 double-spaced pages + optional 2 pages of images).
CV (max 5 pages).
Work plan timeline (including travel/milestones).
Bibliography (1 page).
Transcripts (pre-doctoral only).
Budget.
Evidence of local support (for Research & Travel Award only).
Two letters of reference (pre-doctoral must include dissertation advisor).
