About Commonwealth PhD Scholarships
The Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027-28 is a fully funded doctoral program offered by the UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for talented individuals from eligible Commonwealth countries. This prestigious scholarship enables candidates to pursue a PhD at top UK universities, acquire advanced research skills, and contribute to sustainable development goals. It covers all major expenses including tuition, airfare, monthly stipends, and family allowances, making it a life-changing opportunity for those who cannot otherwise afford international study.
Benefits of Commonwealth PhD Scholarships

- Monthly stipend of £1,712, or £2,000 per month.

- Family allowances: spouse with no children – £313/month for up to 9 months.
- Spouse and children allowance: £313/month spouse + £313 first child + £154 per second/third child under 16.
- Single parent allowance: £622/month first child + £154 per second/third child under 16.
Commonwealth PhD Scholarships Requirements
- Be a citizen, refugee, or British Protected Person of an eligible Commonwealth country.
- Be a permanent resident of an eligible Commonwealth country.
- Available to start study in the UK by September 2027.
- Hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honors, or a lower second-class (2:2) with a relevant Master’s degree by September 2027.
- Must not be registered for an MPhil/PhD or PhD at a UK or home university before September/October 2026.
- Provide evidence of being unable to afford UK study without the scholarship.
- Submit all required documents in the specified format.
- No age limit for CSC applications.
- Candidates with disabilities may receive additional financial support after needs assessment.
Application Date and Process
- Apply via the CSC’s online application system.
- Also apply through a nominator: a national nominating agency, selected university, or NGO.
- Each nominator has its own eligibility criteria and may set earlier deadlines.
- Nominators forward selected candidates to the CSC.
- The CSC makes final selections; nomination does not guarantee award.
