About CODESRIA - Democratic Governance Institute Program

The 2026 Democratic Governance Institute aims to promote critical research, intellectual exchange, and policy dialogue on migration governance and democratic agency in Africa. The programme provides a platform for scholars and practitioners to examine emerging migration issues, governance challenges, and democratic processes while strengthening research collaboration across the continent.

Benefits of CODESRIA - Democratic Governance Institute Program

CODESRIA will provide:

  • 15 fully funded places for participants.
  • Up to 5 self-funded places for additional participants.
  • Young African academics from the diaspora and non-African scholars who can finance their participation may also apply for the limited self-funded positions.

CODESRIA - Democratic Governance Institute Program Requirements

Resource Persons

Applications are invited from:

  • Academics.

  • Academically inclined policy actors.

  • Researchers based at African universities.

  • Researchers from related research centres.

Applicants must submit:

  • Application letter.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé.

  • Two published papers relevant to the Institute theme.

  • A proposal (maximum five pages) outlining two proposed lectures, including one lecture on research methodology.

Laureate Participants

Eligible applicants include:

 

  • PhD candidates.

  • Early-career scholars with demonstrated research capacity.

  • Applicants must demonstrate strong engagement with the Institute’s research theme.

  •  
  • Intellectuals engaged in policy processes.

  • Members of social movements.

  • Representatives of civil society organizations.

  • Confirm their eligibility for either the resource person or laureate category.
  • Prepare all required application documents.
  • Develop a research proposal aligned with the Institute theme.
  • Obtain the necessary reference and affiliation letters.
