About Creative New Zealand - New Leaders Programme

The New Leaders Programme is a leadership development initiative designed for emerging senior leaders working in New Zealand’s arts sector.

The programme recognises that moving into a senior executive position can involve significant responsibilities, particularly when organisations are experiencing change, growth or financial and operational pressures.

Participants receive structured professional development focused on practical leadership skills, strategic decision-making and organisational management.

Benefits of Creative New Zealand - New Leaders Programme

The curriculum addresses a broad range of leadership and organisational management topics.

Te Tiriti and Cultural Leadership : Participants explore leadership approaches connected to Te Tiriti and cultural responsibility within the New Zealand arts context. This area helps leaders consider how cultural understanding and responsive leadership can influence organisational practice and relationships.

Governance :The programme explores the relationship between senior executives, governance bodies and boards. Participants can develop a stronger understanding of:

  • Governance responsibilities

  • Executive leadership

  • Board relationships

  • Decision-making

  • Organisational accountability

Strategic Leadership : Strategic leadership focuses on helping participants develop the ability to set direction, make informed decisions and guide organisations toward long-term objectives.

Organisational Change : Arts organisations may face changes in funding, audiences, staffing, strategy and operating environments. Participants explore approaches for managing organisational change while maintaining effective leadership and communication.

Human Resources : The programme addresses people management and workplace leadership.

Topics may include:

  • Staff management

  • Leadership responsibilities

  • Workplace relationships

  • Team development

  • Organisational culture

Performance Management : Participants develop knowledge and approaches for managing organisational and staff performance effectively.

Revenue Generation: Revenue generation is another important leadership area. Participants explore approaches to building sustainable income and strengthening the financial resilience of arts organisations.

Advocacy : The programme helps leaders understand how to advocate for their organisations, communities and the wider arts sector.

Media Training : Participants also receive exposure to media training to strengthen their ability to communicate clearly and confidently with journalists and other media representatives.

Creative New Zealand - New Leaders Programme Requirements

Leaders who are new to senior executive positions in arts organisations or communities.

To apply, you must:

  • be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • have been in your role for less than two years.

Application Date and Process

To apply, submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) by 1:00 PM (NZ time) on Wednesday 9 September 2026.

Your EOI needs to include:

  • your name and contact information
  • the senior executive role you are in, or will be stepping into
  • the benefits or opportunities you expect to bring to your organisation or community through the programme
  • the knowledge gaps or areas you would like to develop through the programme
  • a brief biography outlining your career or development journey to date, or a link to your biography online
  • the leadership challenge you would like to focus on for your coaching.

You cannot save and return to the EOI form, so we recommend preparing your responses before you begin.
