Practice-oriented studies at universities of applied sciences and universities of applied sciences (HAW, formerly universities of applied sciences) are highly regarded in Germany and around the world. The DAAD supports HAW students during their stays abroad and the universities in cooperation projects with international partners. More information about the entire HAW. A special offer for doctoral candidates at German universities of applied sciences has now been added. This programme supports research stays abroad during a doctorate at a German UAS. The stays abroad can be between one and six months. The funding period can be divided over time and can also take place in different countries.
Benefits of DAAD Scholarships -HAW. International: Research Scholarships for Doctoral Candidates at Universities of Applied Sciences
The scholarship includes the following benefits:
- a monthly scholarship rate fixed according to the host country: scholarship calculator (in this program, the rates apply to doctoral students). The scholarship rates are subject to reservation for scholarships awarded for funding in the academic year 2026/2027.
- Travel allowance depending on the host country.
- Health, accident and personal liability insurance benefits
- A monthly lump sum for research and congress costs of 102 euros
In addition, you can apply for further benefits after the start of funding:
- Subsidy for tuition fees up to a ceiling
- Subsidy for a language course (national language or language of instruction or work)
- Family benefits for accompanying spouses or partners and/or children
- Grant for travel in the host country that is directly related to the project (please submit a cost estimate with confirmation from the supervising university lecturer with the application). Accommodation costs cannot be reimbursed.
- Travel and subsistence expenses according to the Federal Travel Expenses Act for your supervising university lecturer for a trip of up to 10 days to your host location abroad
- In the case of a disability or chronic illness: upon application, if necessary, a subsidy for foreign-related, justified additional costs that are necessary to be able to realise the project in the host country and which are not covered by a third party; whether and to what extent a subsidy is paid will be checked and determined on an individual basis

- You must be accepted as a doctoral student at a German university of applied sciences or in the case of a cooperative doctorate at a German university by the application deadline. If formal acceptance is still pending, proof of the assignment of the dissertation topic is sufficient (see "Application documents"). In the case of a cooperative doctorate in cooperation with a German university, the cooperation agreement with the HAW, which is the basis for the cooperative doctoral procedure, must be submitted.
- The start of doctoral studies must not be more than three years ago by the application deadline, unless there are special reasons
