About Editing Press: The Laura Bassi Scholarship

Opportunity Details

The Laura Bassi Scholarship was founded in 2018 with the intention of offering junior academics and postgraduates who conduct research on understudied subjects in their fields editorial support. Every discipline is eligible for the scholarships, which are given out three times a year in December, April, and August.

Laura Bassi, who was born in Bologna in 1711, was the first woman in Europe to be appointed as a professor and the second to be awarded a PhD. Throughout the majority of her remarkable five-decade academic career, she served as a catalyst for the scientific movement in eighteenth-century Europe. Some of Bassi’s admirers were Frenchwoman Voltaire, who thought that Bassi’s academy was superior to that of London, and German degree recipient Dorothea Erxleben, who was greatly inspired by Bassi’s tenacious fight for women’s equality.
