The Growing Canada’s Community Canopies initiative is a funding program designed to support large-scale tree planting and urban forest expansion projects across Canada.The initiative helps municipalities and partner organizations plant and manage trees strategically to improve climate resilience, biodiversity, and ecosystem health. By encouraging the planting of the right trees in the right locations, the program ensures that communities develop sustainable and long-lasting urban forests.This initiative is part of the Green Municipal Fund’s nature-based climate solutions strategy, which focuses on environmental sustainability through ecosystem restoration and climate action.
The program provides substantial financial support to municipalities undertaking tree planting initiatives.
Funding includes:
Up to 50% of eligible project costs
Up to $10 million in project funding per municipality
Up to $1 million for infrastructure-related activities
These funding limits apply per municipality over the lifetime of the program.
A wide range of organizations can apply for funding, provided that municipal government participation and accountability are included.
Eligible Applicants

Canadian municipal governments (cities, towns, regions, districts, and local boards)
Municipal corporations
Regional organizations delivering municipal services
Indigenous organizations and communities
Canadian not-for-profit organizations
For-profit or private-sector entities registered in Canada
