About Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation
The Truman Foundation administers the award and prepares the nation’s next generation of public service leaders. It selects approximately 55–65 Truman Scholars annually based on leadership ability, commitment to a career in public service, and likelihood of success in graduate school. The Foundation works with undergraduate institutions, advisors, and regional review panels to recruit and interview top candidates across the United States.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation Requirements
- Must be a United States citizen or national
- Must secure nomination from their undergraduate institution
- Demonstrate leadership ability by using positions in unique ways or creating opportunities
- Show a lengthy record of service and detailed plans for a public service career
- Exhibit likelihood of success in graduate school through intellectual curiosity and readiness
Application Date and Process
- Secure your campus nomination early
- Work with your advisor to access the Truman online application system
- Complete the lengthy application form and policy proposal
- Provide three letters of recommendation and transcripts
- Submit all materials by the first Tuesday in February 2027 (2 February 2027)
- Finalists interview with Regional Review Panels; notifications sent by mid-April 2027
