About Harvard Global Health Institute Visiting Research Scholarship

The Harvard Global Health Institute’s Visiting Research Scholarship Program offers Harvard faculty the opportunity to host an international collaborator in global health for a six-week, in-person residency in April in Boston, MA. The program is designed to strengthen partnerships, foster academic exchange, and advance shared research goals.

Benefits of Harvard Global Health Institute Visiting Research Scholarship

  • A 6-week in-person experience for academic collaborators at Harvard University.
  • The visiting scholars will be given financial coverage during their in-campus residence through the fellowship award.
  • Similarly, the scholars of the Harvard Visiting Research Scholarship Program will be provided a lump sum stipend for logistical expenses that may include housing, flights to and from Cambridge, MA, health insurance, J-1 visa fees and a daily per diem for food.
  • Networking opportunities and advanced collaboration with global partners.

Harvard Global Health Institute Visiting Research Scholarship Requirements

  • There are different criteria for sponsored Harvard faculty collaborators or HGHI Visiting Research Scholars.
  • The Harvard sponsor must be a Harvard faculty member at any affiliated school or a hospital.
  • The Sponsor must demonstrate significant engagement with the visiting scholar before the visit. This opportunity is focused on strengthening existing collaborations rather than developing new ones.
  • The sponsoring mentor must agree to develop a work plan and meet regularly with their visiting scholars during their time on campus and make a strong case that in-person collaborative time would be beneficial.
  • Similarly, the visiting scholar should have a relevant degree in a doctoral field. Exceptional candidates with a master’s degree will be considered.
  • The visiting scholar must be in good standing with their home institution.
  • An active passport and the ability to obtain a J-1 visa for travel to the United States will be required.
  • The visiting scholar must reside in the Boston, MA area during their time in residence.
  • Moreover, the candidates must satisfy the visa requirements for English language.
  • The candidates must demonstrate evidence of significant collaborative work with the sponsor or the foundations for significant collaborative work is required.
  • This opportunity is intended for peer collaborators or near-peer collaborators rather than junior mentees of the sponsoring faculty member.
  • The collaborative work could be the publications of peer-reviewed manuscripts, codeveloped educational curricula, partnerships on policy, or service work.
  • Moreover, the sponsoring mentors’ primary Harvard Department must agree to provide a necessary academic appointment (HUID) and sponsor a J-1 visa for a visiting scholar.
