About HHMI Gilliam Fellowship Competition
The 2027 Gilliam Fellowship aims to support outstanding PhD students in biological and biomedical sciences while strengthening inclusive scientific training environments. The updated competition includes expanded eligibility criteria, increased financial support, a revised application timeline, and a new postdoctoral funding pathway.
Benefits of HHMI Gilliam Fellowship Competition

- $50,000 annual stipend
- $5,000 discretionary allowance
- $10,000 institutional allowance for tuition, health insurance, and fees
- New pathway for postdoctoral research support
HHMI Gilliam Fellowship Competition Requirements
- Second- or third-year PhD students in biological or biomedical sciences
- International PhD students at eligible U.S. institutions can apply
- MD-PhD and DVM-PhD students are eligible
- Must apply jointly with a thesis advisor
