About IWM Digital Humanism Fellowship in Austria

The Institute for Human Sciences (Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen – IWM) is an internationally acclaimed institute for advanced study in Vienna, Austria. Funded in partnership with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure, this fellowship provides selected junior scholars with a dedicated office, access to top-tier research infrastructure, and a monthly stipend to investigate how technological innovations can be aligned with human values and social well-being.

IWM Digital Humanism Fellowship in Austria Requirements

To be eligible for the Digital Humanism Junior Visiting Fellowship, you must satisfy the following criteria:

Academic Level & Qualification

  • You must be currently enrolled in a recognized doctoral (PhD) program, OR
  • You must have obtained and defended your PhD not longer than four years prior to the application deadline (defended on or after 21 September 2022).
  • Open to scholars from all academic disciplines (computer science, social sciences, humanities, law, economics, philosophy, etc.).

Nationality & Prior Fellowship Rules

  • Open to applicants of all nationalities and countries.
  • Single Application Rule: Multiple fellowship applications from the same candidate within the same academic year are not accepted.
  • Past Fellows Rule: Candidates who have previously received an IWM fellowship must wait at least three academic years before applying again.

Language & Format Requirement

  • All application materials must be submitted in English.
  • All application files must be merged into a single PDF document.
  • Attachment filenames must contain Latin characters only.

 

Application Date and Process

Follow these steps to submit your application for the IWM Digital Humanism Fellowship:

  • Draft your motivation letter, short description, 7,500-character research proposal, and CV in English.
  • Merge all documents into a single PDF file with a Latin filename (e.g., LastName_IWM_Application.pdf).
  • Confirm the email addresses of your two academic recommenders.

  • Submit your form before 21 September 2026 (23:59 CEST). Remind your recommenders to complete the submission immediately upon receiving the automated email.
