About KWI International Fellowships

The KWI Fellowship Programme supports outstanding postdoctoral researchers in the humanities worldwide by offering funding, research infrastructure, and an interdisciplinary academic environment in Germany, with a strong focus on innovative, internationally oriented research aligned with KWI’s thematic agenda.

Benefits of KWI International Fellowships

Fellowship benefits include:

  • A monthly allowance of €3,000 before tax, intended to cover living expenses such as rent and insurance

  • Partial reimbursement of travel costs for arrival and departure

Any additional travel costs beyond the partial reimbursement must be covered by the fellow.

KWI International Fellowships Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Have completed a PhD

  • Have no more than six years of postdoctoral experience, counted from the date of PhD completion

  • Hold a PhD awarded in 2020 or later

Application Date and Process

They kindly ask you to apply in the form of one single PDF-file (max. 20 MB) which must be submitted electronically to [email protected] Due to IT safety regulations, they cannot accept applications via links to external platforms.

  • The application deadline is 28 Februrary 2026, 2026, 24:00 (midnight, CET).
  • The application must be formulated in English and must contain a CV, a list of publications, a PhD certificate, and a proposal sketching your KWI project (up to max. 5.000 characters).
  • We will not consider applications that are incomplete, submitted after the deadline, sent in multiple files, or include project proposals that exceed the specified length.
  • The fellows will be selected by a committee assembling members of the KWI governing board and the institute’s director.
