About IIE - NextGen Service Fellowship

The NextGen Service Fellowship provides funding for U.S. college students at partner universities to gain hands-on experience in international development while addressing the needs of communities overseas. This Fellowship aims to inspire and equip the next generation of American public service leaders through immersive, hands-on experience working in and with communities around the world, including Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean.   

Benefits of IIE - NextGen Service Fellowship

Program benefits are for a 4-week program. Students participating in longer programs may self-fund portions beyond 4 weeks. Please see summer program options for more information about program timing. The Fellowship covers:  

  • $5,000 to cover housing, food, local transportation, and incidentals, including visa expenses, over a 4-week period 
  • Round-trip economy airfare from the United States to program destination* 
  • Enrollment in IIE’s International Health Insurance Plan* 

*If you are required to purchase airfare or insurance through your program or university, IIE will reimburse based on equivalent amounts had IIE booked directly.  

IIE - NextGen Service Fellowship Requirements

All applicants must be U.S. citizens and meet the following criteria by the application deadline: 

  • 21 years or older  
  • Enrolled as a student at a partner university as of May 1, 2026 (see list below) 
  • Available to participate in an international summer 2026 internship, service-learning, or volunteer project for a 4-week period between mid-July and mid-August 
    • IIE-placed projects will take place from July 18-August 15
    • Self-placed projects will vary. See Summer Program Options page for more details
  • All fields of study are eligible 
  • Previous grantees of the NextGen Service Fellowship are not eligible to apply
