About International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) Foundational Learning Journalism Initiative: Reporting on Literacy and Numeracy in Kenya, Senegal and South Africa

An estimated 9 out of 10 children in sub-Saharan Africa cannot read for meaning or do simple math by age 10. The evidence of what works to improve learning outcomes is known, and political will is growing – but not enough countries are implementing reforms at scale. More must be done through African journalism to embed this issue in the public consciousness.

ICFJ+ is seeking journalists and content creators in Kenya, Senegal and South Africa to join an initiative that will equip them with the knowledge, skills and networks to produce data-driven, solutions-oriented reporting on foundational literacy and numeracy.
