About Leibniz Institute of Human History (IEG) Fellowships for Doctoral Students in Germany

The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz awards 6-12 month fellowships for doctoral students in European history, the history of religion and other historical disciplines. The fellowship is intended to support you in pursuing your individual research project. Preference will be given to funding for the writing of a dissertation; preparatory research, language courses, and the revision of book manuscripts are not eligible for funding.

Benefits of Leibniz Institute of Human History (IEG) Fellowships for Doctoral Students in Germany

  • The IEG Fellowship, which has a monthly value of € 1650, provides doctoral students full funding for their research project.
  • Fellowship holders may be eligible for a family allowance if their partners go with them to Mainz and do not earn more than 450 euros per month. Kindly specify in your application if you are traveling to Mainz with a companion.
  • Fellows may claim a child allowance if they travel to Mainz with their minor children.

Leibniz Institute of Human History (IEG) Fellowships for Doctoral Students in Germany Requirements

  • Ph.D. candidates with at least a Master’s degree in history, theology, or a related historical field from Germany and beyond are eligible for these.
  • Fellows are required to turn in a final report on their project at the conclusion of the funding period.
  • To participate in talks at the Institute, one must be proficient in German and English.
