About Max Planck Dissertation Writing-Up Fellowship
The Max Planck Dissertation Fellowship 2027 in Germany offers doctoral candidates in the final stage of their PhD a unique opportunity to complete their dissertation at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. This fully funded fellowship provides a monthly living stipend and access to world-class research resources. The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle (Saale) is one of the leading centres for research in social anthropology. Its Law & Anthropology Department provides an interdisciplinary forum for anthropologists and legal scholars to conduct cutting-edge, policy-relevant research on legal pluralism and social change.

Max Planck Dissertation Writing-Up Fellowship Requirements
- Doctoral candidates in the final stage of their PhD programme
- Topic must be of immediate relevance to the Law & Anthropology Department’s research programme
- Priority given to applicants working towards PhDs in anthropology
- Clear understanding must be reached in advance between the Director and the candidate’s principal supervisor
Required Application Documents

- A writing sample consisting of one chapter of the PhD dissertation.
- A one- to two-page summary of the doctoral research.
- Copies of university degrees and academic transcripts.
- A recommendation letter from the principal supervisor confirming that the applicant has reached a sufficiently advanced stage to complete the dissertation within the fellowship period.
