About Mercatus Center at George Mason University James Buchanan Fellowship
The James Buchanan Fellowship is a one-year, competitive fellowship program awarded to scholars in any discipline who have recently graduated from their doctoral programs. The aim of this fellowship is to encourage early-career scholars to critically engage ideas in the political economy of Adam Smith and the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy. In addition, James Buchanan Fellows will be introduced to contemporary applications of these ideas to questions in social sciences dealing with the dynamics and institutional underpinnings of economic, political, and social coordination.

Mercatus Center at George Mason University James Buchanan Fellowship Requirements
- Students applying for the fellowship program must have completed their PhD program within the last six years.
- Applicants must have an excellent academic position at an accredited university or a good research position with an organization that is dedicated to in-depth research in social sciences and other sciences.
- Applicants must have be able to commit to travel for three weekends for colloquia of the fellowship during the upcoming academic year.
- Moreover, applicants with research or teaching interests that can benefit from a greater understanding of critical writings in political economy are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants must adhere to policies, program procedures and deadlines provided by Mercatus Center staff related to the activities of the Fellowship program.
- Applicants must attend and actively participate in all the scheduled programs of the events, including meals and other social activities.
