Miles Morland Foundation Writing Scholarship 2026 (With Up to £18,000 in Funding) Requirements

  • The scholarships are open to writers born in Africa or with both parents born in Africa.
  • Applicants must submit a previously published excerpt of their work, written in English, between 2000 to 5000 words.
  • The submitted work must have been both published and made available for sale.
  • Academic, scientific, religious, or political works are not eligible for the Miles Morland scholarship.
  • Similarly, scholars are required to submit at least 10,000 new words each month during the scholarship period.
  • Candidates must also submit a book description of 400 to 1000 words outlining their intended project.
  • The proposed project must be a new, full-length book of at least 80,000 words, written in English.
  • It is not a residential scholarship. Applicants are free to decide their living arrangements during the scholarship year.
  • Moreover, the scholarship does not support collaborative works or short story collections.
  • The proposal must be for a new project, not an existing work in progress and should be in the English language.
  • The scholarship only accepts proposals for full-length adult fiction or non-fiction books. Poetry, plays, film scripts, children’s books, and short story collections are not eligible.

Application Date and Process

  • A submission of between 2,000 to 5,000 words as a Word document of work that has been published and offered for sale. 
  • Proof of publication and proof of sale.
  • A description of between 400 – 1,000 words about the new book you intend to write. 
  •  A scan of an official document showing that you, or both of your parents, were born in Africa.
  •  A brief bio of between 200 – 300 words.
