Opportunity Details
Press On Freedomways Reporting Fellowship 2026 is a fellowship program designed to support six journalists and storytellers from the U.S. South in producing one major longform, investigative, or enterprise story. The program emphasizes movement journalism, which means reporting that uplifts justice-focused issues and communities building power.
Stipend: $1,000/month ($8,000 total)
Additional support: Mentorship, training, investigative resources, and possible extra funds for project expenses
Eligibility
Focused on applicants based in the Southern U.S. (Florida, Texas, Georgia, Alabama, etc., plus Puerto Rico).
Those outside the South may apply if they have strong ties or accountability to the region.
Encourages applications from BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, immigrant, disabled, and rural reporters.
Requirements
Develop a story pitch and reporting plan
Attend mentor check-ins and monthly trainings
Create an engagement plan to deepen impact
Publish one major story during the fellowship
