About Public Space Distance Scholarship for Ukrainian Migrants and Scientists Abroad

The LivArch project invites Ukrainian scholars residing outside Ukraine to apply for short-term, paid fellowships to support research related to Russia’s war on Ukraine. The program emphasizes the development of methods and theories for documenting, preserving, and ethically presenting diverse sources about the war. Fellowships empower individuals and initiatives that curate and analyze such sources responsibly.

Benefits of Public Space Distance Scholarship for Ukrainian Migrants and Scientists Abroad

  • Stipend: €1,500 per month covering living expenses, travel, health insurance, and materials

  • Optional travel support: Up to €500 for short-term stay in Marburg

Public Space Distance Scholarship for Ukrainian Migrants and Scientists Abroad Requirements

  • Ukrainian scholars currently residing outside Ukraine

  • Open to early-career and experienced scholars

  • Fluency in English or German is required

  • Preference for applicants whose work aligns with the project’s thematic framework

Application Date and Process

To apply, please send the following materials in English in PDF format (in one file) to the LivArch project coordinator, Tabitha Redepenning ([email protected])

  • Cover letter (maximum 1 page): Describe your research interests and explain how your work relates to the LivArch project. You can also outline how the scholarship contributes to your ongoing academic or professional development.
  • Resume (CV): Include a list of publications and relevant research or professional experience.
  • Research/Activity Proposal (up to 3 pages): Provide a brief description of your proposed project, including:

– Your main research objectives and planned methods,

– The current status of your project (e.g. at an early stage, ongoing, almost complete, or in transition between grants),

– A short strategy or timeline outlining what you expect to achieve during the scholarship

– Potential deliverables or products (e.g., blog post, report, posts, datasets, collaborations).

Please also indicate whether the project has already started or is part of a larger ongoing research activity, and highlight any opportunities for collaboration with other researchers.

  • Letter of recommendation (optional): A letter of recommendation from the academic supervisor of your current project is desirable but not required.
  • Scanned copies of recent diplomas and certificates: Attach copies of your academic degrees.

Selection

  • Applications are considered by the members of the project board, on the basis of which scholarships will be awarded. The reasons for the decision to accept or reject applications are not communicated to the applicant(s). Also, we must inform you that there can be no legal claims regarding scholarships.
  • The Herder Institute promotes professional equality between women and men and seeks to reconcile work and family life. In line with this, women are especially encouraged to apply.
