The L.W. Nelson Trust 2025 Contestable Round is about providing charitable grants to organisations in Northland, New Zealand.
Grant size: Between NZD $3,000 – $15,000
Scope of funding:
Projects and programmes that enhance community engagement
Operational costs, salaries, and essential equipment
Partial support for capital items
Exclusions: Purely academic, recreational, or overseas activities
Must be a registered charitable organisation with Charities Services OR an incorporated society.
Organisation must be based in Northland, New Zealand (Kaipara, Whangarei, Far North) or provide services there.
Funding request must be between $3,000 and $15,000.
Financial statements must comply with DIA – Charities Services Reporting Standards (same ones filed in your latest Charities return).
Determine Eligibility
Review the Trust’s funding criteria on the Public Trust website.
Confirm your organisation is a registered charity or incorporated society in Northland, New Zealand.
Register or Log In
First-time users must register on the SmartyGrants portal (requires an email address).
Organisations can use a generic email (e.g., [email protected]) so multiple staff can access the same login.
Once registered, you can log in and begin your application.
Complete the Application Form
Fill in all required questions (marked with *).
Attach all required supporting documents (preferred formats: PDF, Excel, Word, JPG).
File size limit: 25MB per attachment.
Save your work regularly to avoid losing progress.
Review Your Application
Use the “Review” button to check all sections are complete.
Only after review can you press “Submit.”
Submit Your Application
Once submitted, you cannot edit or upload additional documents.
You’ll receive an automated confirmation email with a copy of your application.
If you don’t receive this email, your application was not successfully submitted (check spam folder).
After Submission
Applications are assessed by the Board of Trustees.
Decisions (successful or unsuccessful) will be communicated by end of February 2026.
The Board’s decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
