The Royal Irish Academy’s Standing Committee for Archaeology is responsible for managing and awarding funding provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (through the National Monuments Service), the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland (through the Historic Environment Division), and the RIA itself.
The programme is open to:
Undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students
Early-career to experienced archaeologists
Researchers conducting projects in Ireland or Northern Ireland
Priority is given to applicants based on the island of Ireland; international applicants are considered case-by-case
Eligibility Conditions:
Applicants must not have overdue statutory, consent, or licence reports unless an official compliance letter and agreed submission date are in place
Projects must be clearly defined, feasible, and compliant with licensing regulations
Prepare Documentation: Include project description, methodology, timeline, and dissemination plan
Compile Support Materials: Referee details, verification of competency, cost breakdowns, and specialist quotations where relevant
Secure Permissions: Obtain approvals from authorities and landowners if required
Submit Online Application: Complete the RIA online form and attach all supporting documents
Review Process: Applications are assessed by the Grants subcommittee of the Standing Committee for Archaeology based on:
Relevance to the programme’s objectives
Applicant’s experience and ability to deliver the project
Quality and feasibility of research design and methodology
Strength of dissemination plan
