About Royal Society APEX Awards
This research award is for established independent researchers based at a UK university or a not-for-profit research institution for the duration of the project. The program encourages interdisciplinary and curiosity-led research that can benefit society. The APEX Awards are supported by the Leverhulme Trust and offered in collaboration with the British Academy, the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering. They provide a unique opportunity for experienced and independent researchers to gain funding and support for their work.
Benefits of Royal Society APEX Awards
- Applicants will receive funding of up to £200,000.
- The funding can support staff costs, including research assistants, undergraduate or Master’s students, PhD students, and teaching replacement.
- It can also be used to cover any associated research costs of not more than 25 per cent of the total award value.
- Applicants can include funding of up to £10,000 for public engagement activities within their main application.
- The international award is a paid program and an excellent opportunity for researchers to receive funding.
Royal Society APEX Awards Requirements
- Applicants must be based at a UK university or a not-for-profit research institution for at least the duration of the project.
- Applicants must be established independent researchers with a strong research track record in their fields such as science, engineering, humanities or social sciences.
- Applicants must collaborate with a research partner (co-applicant) from a different academic discipline or a different university within the UK.
- All applications must include support from the applicant’s Head of Department.
- Research proposals must fall within the scope of at least two of the participating academies (e.g., the British Academy and Royal Academy of Engineering). Proposals limited to the domain of only one academy will not be accepted.
- Applicants can only submit one application per award cycle.
