About British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship
The British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship offers funded research awards for outstanding academics in the humanities and social sciences who are based in the United Kingdom. Successful applicants can take a six- to twelve-month break from teaching and administrative duties to complete a substantial research project and share their findings with the public. The award supports mid-career scholars who have already made significant contributions to their field and can communicate with wide audiences.
The British Academy is the provider of this scheme. It aims to encourage notable individual scholars with strong research proposals and to increase public understanding and engagement in the humanities and social sciences. The Academy uses the Full Economic Costing framework and supports fellows to develop public engagement plans and achieve impact in philosophy, politics, and society.
Benefits of British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship
- Funding under the Full Economic Costing (FEC) framework with the Academy contributing 80% of the full economic cost.
- The Academy’s contribution to the Mid-Career Fellow’s pay is capped at £80,000.
- Total award value is not expected to exceed £152,000.
- Awards may be valid for a minimum of six months and a maximum of twelve months.
- Successful applicants are freed from normal academic and administrative commitments to complete a substantial research project.
- Support to develop a public engagement and communication strategy for research outputs.
British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship Requirements
- Applicants must normally be within 15 years of receiving their PhD or first academic appointment if they do not have a doctorate.
- Candidates must be working at a university, higher education institution, or independent research organization located in the United Kingdom.
- Applicants should be established mid-career academics who can effectively communicate their work to the general audience.
- The Academy does not consider an applicant’s physical age or present situation when considering candidacy.
- Awards are intended for researchers who have made an outstanding contribution to their field and are excellent communicators and champions in their field.
- The Academy makes allowances for applicants with career breaks and established researchers without doctorates who are within fifteen years of their initial academic position.

- Prepare required documents: academic transcripts, online application form, research plan, two letters of recommendation, recent passport-size photo, valid passport or national ID, and CV or resume.
- Submit the online application form and supporting documents by the deadline of 26 August 2026.
- Develop your public engagement plan for research outputs.
- Complete a major research project during the fellowship period.
