Opportunity Details

This program is mainly for those who design, plan, and deliver innovative research projects that aim to advance understanding in their field of career or develop methodologies, frameworks, tools, and techniques that could benefit health-related research.

These awards aim to expand early-career researchers’ technical skills, research methodologies, or frameworks and to support building a cooperative network with other researchers. This Award also seeks to develop the management skills of researchers, advance their understanding of how to complete research responsibly and promote an inclusive culture.

Benefits of The Wellcome Early-Career Awards for International Researchers

Grant holders can benefit from a salary determined by the host organization and up to £400,000 for research expenses. Researchers can also request overheads or overseas allowances, which won’t count against the £400,000 limit for research expenses. Grant holders are allowed to ask for the following costs but must justify the prices in their application:

  • A basic salary from the host organization
  • Relocation allowance and costs
  • Staff salary and expenses
  • Continuing professional development and training
  • Materials and consumables
  • Animals required for tests
  • Equipment such as computers and other facilities
  • Access charges
  • Overheads
  • Travel and subsistence
  • Overseas allowances
  • Fieldwork expenses
  • Inflation allowance
  • Open access charges
  • Clinical research costs
  • Public engagement and patient involvement costs
  • Contract research organizations
  • Other costs

The Wellcome Early-Career Awards for International Researchers Requirments

There are some eligibility criteria for an applicant to meet before applying for the Wellcome Early-Career Awards. Applicant must:

  • Be an early-career researcher who designs, plans, and delivers an innovative research project
  • Have passed previous degrees and sufficient research training
  • Have an eligible host sponsor organization in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, or a low- or middle-income country (apart from India and mainland China)
  • Your research can be in any discipline, such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics, humanities and social science, experimental medicine, clinical or allied health sciences, and public health.
  • The project must potentially improve human life, health, and well-being.
  • Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. or an equivalent higher research degree.
  • Be able to submit a bold, creative, and high-quality research proposal
  • Be passionate about expanding technical skills or experience with different research methodologies or frameworks
  • Be passionate about building a cooperative network with other researchers
  • Have the ability to develop their people management skills
  • Have the ability to advance their understanding of how to complete research and promote an inclusive culture.
  • Meet any other criteria required.
  • By the end of the program, applicants should be able to promote their independent research projects
  • Applicants should provide a sponsorship from an eligible host organization in one of the following countries:
  1. UK
  2. Republic of Ireland
  3. low- or middle-income country excluding India and mainland China

Requirements for the Host Organization

The host organization can be one of the following:

  • A higher education institution
  • Research Institute
  • Non-academic healthcare organization
  • Not-for-profit organization.

Assessment Criteria 

The selection committee will review the applicant’s research proposal, skills and experience, and research environment as follows:

To be competitive, the research proposal should be (50%)L

  • Bold—The proposal aims to significantly shift understanding or provide a substantial advance over existing methodologies, techniques, conceptual frameworks, or tools.
  • Creative- Provide a novel approach and develop and test new concepts, methods, or technologies.
  • A high-quality proposal should be well-designed, transparent, evidence-supported, and with feasible outcomes/outputs.

The selection committee will also review skills, experience (25%), and research environment (25%).

Who Can’t Apply?

You are not eligible to apply if:

  • As an applicant, you hold an equivalent fellowship at this career stage.
  • You have applied to this program and are awaiting a response.
  • You already have a tenured (post) for the duration of the award

Expectations of the Host Organization?

Applicants should be at an eligible organization that can sign up for their grant conditions. Applicants’ host organization should:

  • Be based at a qualified organization
  • Guarantee agreement and availability of the space and resources needed throughout the research project
  • Explain how the research best fits with the strategic aims of the organization.
  • Provide you with the same status and perks as other senior academic personnel.
  • When you join the organization and begin the Award, we provide an onboarding, embedding, and planning system.
  • Allow you and any grant-funded employees ten days per year (pro rata if part-time) to participate in Concordat-compliant training and ongoing professional development (CPD).

The following are the application procedure and stages of the Award:

  • Before applying, applicants must read everything carefully and submit their application to the host organization for approval. Find the sample application here.
  • The host organization will review and then apply to the Wellcome Team
  • The Wellcome Team evaluates applications against the eligibility criteria to shortlist the best application
  • The Wellcome Team will check for external written expert reviews on shortlisted applications
  • The Early-Career Interview Committee will interview shortlisted candidates at the Wellcome offices in London
  • The Discovery Research Decision Board will decide the final funding decision
  • Unsuccessful applicants will receive Written feedback at the end
