About UNNF Strategic Needs Fellowship
The Strategic Needs Fellowship aims to enable developing States, particularly least developed countries, small island developing States and landlocked developing countries, to better address strategically important and time-sensitive issues facing them in ocean affairs and the law of the sea.

UNNF Strategic Needs Fellowship Requirements
- Firstly, all applicants for the Nippon Foundation Fellowship 2026 must fall between 25 and 40 years of age and come from a developing country.
- Secondly, applicants must hold at least a first university degree and demonstrate the ability to conduct independent advanced academic research and study.
- Moreover, mid-level professionals and government officials can apply, provided they actively work in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, particularly in the implementation of UNCLOS and SDG-14.
- In addition, each applicant must submit a clear research and study plan that directly supports and strengthens their country’s implementation of ocean affairs and the law of the sea.
- Furthermore, applicants must remain fully available throughout the entire fellowship duration, unless the program grants special authorization.
- Finally, UN fellows must complete key deliverables, including a 100-page written thesis, a structured research presentation, and an ocean governance matrix, along with several additional assignments during the fellowship period.
