As an international applicant, you will apply in the same manner as any other first-year applicant. Your application will be read in the context of where you attended high school, whatever your citizenship. The University of Chicago considers you an international applicant for purposes of financial aid if you are neither a U.S. citizen nor a U.S. permanent resident, regardless of where in the world you live and go to school.

University of Chicago Financial Aid and Merit Scholarships Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be an international student (non-US citizen & non-US permanent resident).
  • Must apply for financial aid at the time of admission.
  • Eligible only for first-year undergraduate applicants
  • International transfer applicants do not qualify for financial aid.
  • A strong academic record and proof of English language proficiency are necessary (test scores optional but encouraged if needed).

Required Documents

What to submit?

  • Student Financial Aid Worksheet (submitted via UChicago Account) 
  • Supporting documents for family income and assets, such as:
    • Tax forms (or equivalent, translated into English & converted to USD).
    • Employer statement of income.
    • Bank statements.
    • Asset verification forms (savings, investments, property).
  • High school transcripts and Secondary School Report.
  • Two teacher recommendations.
  • Personal statement and UChicago Supplement essays.
  • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable).

Application Date and Process

  • Apply through either the Common Application or Coalition Application, Powered by Scoir.
  • Create a UChicago Account to upload financial aid forms and track your application.
  • Complete the Student Financial Aid Worksheet online.
  • Submit all required supporting documents (income, assets, transcripts, recommendations).
  • Submit personal statement and UChicago supplement essays.
  • Meet the application deadlines (November 15, January 15, February 15).
  • Wait for admission and aid decision notifications according to the chosen application cycle.
