About University of Toronto Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program​

The University of Toronto Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program provides funding to Graduate Faculties to increase opportunities for hiring postdoctoral fellows from underrepresented groups, specifically Indigenous and Black researchers only. These fellowships will enable postdoctoral researchers to grow their scholarly profiles, undertake academic work at the University of Toronto, and strengthen the research environment at the University with diverse perspectives.

Benefits of University of Toronto Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program​

  • The fellowship provides $80,000 per year for up to two years to support the salary and employment costs of a postdoctoral fellow. This funding level is higher than the median postdoctoral salary at the university and aligns with Canada’s most competitive postdoctoral awards.

University of Toronto Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program​ Requirements

The fellowship is open to Indigenous and/or Black researchers, including both domestic and international applicants.

Nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrate academic excellence and strong research potential
  • Identify as Indigenous to Turtle Island and/or Black
  • Hold a doctoral degree by the fellowship start date (typically earned within the last five years)
  • Not have previously received the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship

Successful fellows must also:

  • Begin the fellowship by January 2027
  • Work under a University of Toronto supervisor affiliated with a graduate unit
  • Register with the Postdoctoral Office at the School of Graduate Studies
  • Avoid holding another major fellowship concurrently
  • Submit an Individual Development Plan (IDP) within the first three months
  • Provide proof of doctoral degree completion within three months of starting

Application Date and Process

Prospective fellows cannot apply directly; instead, they must be nominated by their faculty.

The application process typically includes:

  1. Contacting a potential supervisor or faculty advisor.
  2. Coordinating with the Faculty Research Office to meet internal deadlines.
  3. Submitting a complete nomination package to the School of Graduate Studies.

Each faculty may nominate up to three candidates per self-identification category.

Required Nomination Documents

A complete nomination package must be submitted as a single PDF and includes:

  • Nomination letter from the graduate unit or department chair
  • Supervisor statement outlining mentorship and research alignment
  • Research proposal (maximum two pages plus references)
  • Training statement describing academic and professional development goals
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Short personal biography
