USAJOBS - State Department Internship Requirements

  • Be a US citizen.
  • Be an undergraduate junior/senior or graduate student.
  • Have at least a 3.2 GPA.
  • Have completed at least 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours by the time the internship begins for junior-level eligibility. 
  • Be enrolled in a college or university of any type that offers a degree program.
  • Immediately return to school after internship.
  • Submit an official and/or unofficial transcript.
  • Be able to acquire the necessary security clearance.

  • Complete the internship application and application questionnaire.
  • Answer questions about your personal, academic, and employment experience.
  • Identify preference for Spring 2027 or Summer 2027 and a domestic and/or overseas assignment.
  • Identify up to two geographical or functional areas for your internship assignment.
  • Write statements of interest describing your objectives and motivation.
  • Attach your resume and current official or unofficial transcript as PDF files before the closing deadline.
