The challenges arising out of their education system are multifaceted. These range from high dropout rates, poor learning-levels, to inequity in access to quality education. These also include high prevalence of rote-learning, marks orientation, lack of accountability, and inadequate teacher preparation. These issues are systemic. They need to be addressed through deliberate, long-term and sustained planning to build capacities. Creating public awareness and engagement is also critical.
At Wipro Foundation, they partner with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) for capacity building of important actors in the school education system to bring about desired reforms. They firmly believe that education is an enabler of social change. They envision a democracy where every citizen is empowered.
They envisage this empowerment in terms of individual capacity building. However, for them, this process also entails the development of a culture that values the ethics of equity and the essentiality of diversity. Such a culture, is thus, marked by an ethos of justice. It is also driven by social sensitivity. Schools must be spaces nurturing these principles, capabilities and values.
Their notion of good education focuses on the holistic development of the child. This process encompasses multiple dimensions, including cognitive, social, emotional, physical and ethical abilities. This journey of development must help fulfil and expand their potential, as they become active, contributing and concerned citizens of the world. Learning-to-learn, critical thinking, problem-solving, conceptual understanding, etc., are some of the other important attainments that an effective education system must foster in its learners.
Benefits of Wipro Education Fellowship
- Number of Fellowships per organization: A maximum of three (3) founding members per organization will be supported through the Fellowship at a time.
- Quantum, mode and duration of financial support: The financial support would be provided for up to three (3) years from the date of signing the MoU. It would amount to approximately Rs 4.8 lakhs per year. This will be paid in the form of quarterly stipends.
- Conditions for continued support: Continued support with stipend would be subject to adherence to the clauses of the Agreement signed between the Fellow and Wipro. It is also conditional upon satisfactory progress on the plans submitted during the selection stage, including an organizational development plan. This will be determined by periodic reviews and discussions, and a detailed annual review. Depending on the outcome of these reviews, they may further extend the support to the organizations, after the three-year term is over, on a case-to-case basis.
Wipro Education Fellowship Requirements
- The organization must be in early-stages (6 months to 3 years, preferably), and working to strengthen the public education system, or have concrete plans to engage with the public education system.
- Are preferably working in the domains of Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), Education for Children with Disabilities, Inclusive Education, Nature/Sustainability Education, Computational Thinking/ Computer Science Education.
- The organization should be preferably working in non-metro, rural geographies.
- Fellowships are offered only to founding team members working full-time with the organization.
- Fellows must have a long-term commitment to working in the specified domain and geography.
- Fellows must demonstrate a willingness to engage in educational and organizational capacity building through the fellowship period
