WRITEABILITY® is pleased to announce a two-year initiative, sponsored by a generous donor, designed to support developing writers by providing them with unprecedented community, craft support, resources, and dedicated time to write. For both the 2027-28 and the 2028-29 WRITEABILITY® programming seasons, up to five writers will be selected to receive these Fellowships.
This opportunity is for writers who:
Have never attended a writing residency before.
Have never published a book (including self-published).
Have never earned a graduate-level degree in any genre of creative writing.
Is not currently benefiting from a 2026-27 WRITEABILITY® scholarship. Past recipients of WRITEABILITY® scholarships are eligible.
Identify as African American/African/Black or Native American/Alaska Native.
Demonstrate a dedication to prose writing and a regular writing practice. (See FAQ)
Long to integrate writing into their work/life balance in sustainable ways.
Have a natural inclination to explore their creative process through self-guided inquiry, mentored or facilitated experiences, and an accountability community.
Are available to attend the entire annual WRITEABILITY® Residency in person from May 3 - 9, 2027.
Are available to attend live Zoom sessions on Thursdays from 12 Noon-1:30 pm ET between May 6, 2027 and April 13, 2028. 80% attendance is required; December and July are off.
Will commit to participating in one in-person and one online reading of their work at events organized by WRITEABILITY®.
Will commit to responding to communications from WRITEABILITY® in a timely fashion (in most cases, within three business days of receiving an email).
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS: Note that WRITEABILITY® cannot provide Visa support or advice; all international applicants will receive an additional set of questions following their submission, in order to assure travel to/from the United States is feasible.
