Opportunity Details
The AFA supports Alberta-based artists and arts administrators in creating and promoting visual arts and new media projects. Grants aim to develop individual artistic practice, strengthen the arts ecosystem, and enhance public engagement while promoting equitable and inclusive participation.
Provides up to $18,000 in funding for a single project.
Helps cover costs of creating, developing, or presenting visual arts and new media work.
Must be a resident of Alberta:
Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Person with valid permit.
Primary residence in Alberta for at least one year before applying.
Must ordinarily live in Alberta at least six months per year (exceptions for formal study).
Applicants must be in good standing with AFA (no outstanding projects or reports).
Ensembles/collectives can apply if all project co-owners meet eligibility.
Co-owners include visual artists, curators, directors, composers, or writers with ownership/copyright or financial stake.
Contributors like studio assistants or technicians are not normally considered co-owners.
Submission: Applications are assessed on a project-by-project basis.
Expert Panel Review: Evaluates project merit, impact, artistic and educational value, budget appropriateness, and applicant’s ability to execute the project.

AFA Board Review: Panel recommendations are reviewed by the board; funding is not guaranteed.
Notification: Successful applicants are typically informed four to six months after the deadline.
