About Phillips Exeter Academy - The John and Elizabeth Phillips Dissertation Fellowship
The purpose of the John and Elizabeth Phillips Dissertation Year Fellowship is to provide doctoral students who are in the last year of their dissertations and who might not otherwise consider careers in a residential secondary school the opportunity to gain experience of such a community while working on their dissertations.
Benefits of Phillips Exeter Academy - The John and Elizabeth Phillips Dissertation Fellowship
- Fellows in the 2024-25 school year receive a stipend of $23,500.
- Additionally, Fellows will receive a stipend to cover tuition fees and health insurance at their institution, not to exceed $3,000.
Phillips Exeter Academy - The John and Elizabeth Phillips Dissertation Fellowship Requirements
- This opportunity is for rising scholars and teachers who are historically underrepresented in independent secondary schools.
- This year, priority consideration will be given to scholars who are researching topics related to race, identity, and culture.
Application Date and Process
The online application for the 2025-26 school year will open soon. Applicants should include:
- Current resume or curriculum vitae
- Statement of interest (500-750 words) describing the appropriateness of the fellowship to your situation and your sense of what you will contribute to the intellectual life of the Exeter community
- 15-page writing sample (an article or a seminar paper)
- Letter of recommendation from the chair of your dissertation committee, confirming your ABD (All But Dissertation) status
