About Russell Sage Foundation - Visiting Scholars Fellowship Program

The Russell Sage Foundation’s Visiting Scholars Program provides a unique opportunity for select scholars in the social, economic and behavioral sciences to pursue their research and writing while in residence at the Foundation’s New York headquarters.

Benefits of Russell Sage Foundation - Visiting Scholars Fellowship Program

The award to the institution provides direct salary support only and does not include funds for fringe benefits or indirect costs.

Salary Support:

  • The Visiting Scholar fellowship provides an award to the scholar’s university of up to 50 percent of the scholars direct academic salary up to a maximum of $150,000 for the full academic year, or $75,000 for a half year.

Housing:

  • Scholars who reside outside the greater New York City area are provided with a partially subsidized apartment near the Foundation offices. If scholars are fully funded by external sources, the RSF apartment may be fully subsidized.

Travel and shipping reimbursements:

  • The Foundation will reimburse non-NYC scholars economy-rate travel expenses incurred to be in residence. That includes one round-trip fare and/or ground transportation from their home institution for them, spouse or partner, and any dependent children who accompany them for the entire term of their residency (year or half-year). RSF will reimburse scholars residing outside the NYC metro area for up to $800 in domestic shipping expenses for personal or work-related belongings. An additional $250 will be provided for those coming from the Pacific time zone and an additional $150 per child (up to age 18) residing full-time with the scholar during the fellowship.

Chilcare Subsidy:

  • RSF offers a limited childcare allowance to scholars to offset any additional costs (i.e., charges that exceed those they were paying or expected to pay at their home university) for childcare incurred because of the fellowship. Visiting scholars with children under the age of thirteen are eligible to apply for a childcare allowance. The maximum allowance is $30,000 per preschool child and $10,000 per elementary school child, minus 10% of household income from all sources in excess of $125,000. No subsidy will be provided for middle school children (NYC public schools provide free after school care for middle school students) and for families whose income exceeds $300,000.

Russell Sage Foundation - Visiting Scholars Fellowship Program Requirements

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or comparable terminal degree, or a career background that establishes their ability to conduct high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarly research. Applicants must be at least two years beyond the Ph.D. at the application deadline.
  • The Foundation will consider applications from groups of two, and in some exceptional circumstances, up to three scholars, who are collaborating on a common research project.
  • Individuals are allowed a maximum of two visits to RSF as a Visiting Scholar. A former visiting scholar may apply for a second fellowship that would begin no earlier than seven years after their first visit. However, because of the limited number of scholars selected each year and the high-quality of the applications, first-time applicants, all else equal, receive priority.

Application Date and Process

  • Proposal: Maximum of 5 single-spaced pages (with standard 12-point font and 1-inch margins), excluding (1) up to 2 pages of references and (2) supporting tables and figures.

Proposals should outline the basics of the project to be carried out while in residence, how the project is relevant to RSF's program areas, how the residency would be beneficial to the project, and the expected outcome of the work.

  • CV: 5 pages max

  • Working Group Applications: Each member of a working group must submit an individual application. Working group proposals must include a common statement of the joint project to be undertaken. In the case where one or more group members may not be entirely occupied by the group project, additional detail should be included in the proposal about other individual research to be pursued while in residence.

RSF does not accept supplementary application materials, such as papers and recommendations.
