U.S. Embassy South Africa Fulbright Foreign Student Program Requirements

Citizenship and Residency Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen, or

  • Be a South African permanent resident with at least five years of permanent residency

The following applicants are not eligible:

  • Individuals residing in the United States at the time of application

  • Dual citizens holding U.S. citizenship

Academic Eligibility by Pathway

Eligibility depends on the chosen pathway;

Visiting Student Researcher (PhD):

  • Must be registered for a PhD at a South African university

  • Must remain registered locally for the full duration of the U.S. research stay

Master’s Degree Applicants:

  • Four-year bachelor’s degree, or

  • BTech degree, or

  • Three-year bachelor’s degree plus an honors degree

PhD Degree Applicants:

  • Must have completed a recognized master’s degree
