Opportunity Details

Twice a year, junior fellows are chosen via a competitive application process. Graduate students who are interested in UNU and other UN activities are encouraged to apply. The overarching principles of the program are to give graduate students and young professionals a stimulating, demanding, and rewarding environment

 Program Objectives:

The Junior Fellows Internship Programme in the Rector’s Office serves the following purposes:

  • To promote interaction and dialogue between young academics, professionals, and UNU.
  • To familiarize junior fellows with UNU’s activities and the Rector’s Office processes.
  • To provide young professionals with the chance to gain comprehensive, practical experience in a UN organization.
  • To provide young professionals with an introduction to the administrative work environment and to support the Rector’s Office activities.

United Nations University Junior Fellows Internship Programme Requirments

The following requirements must be met by each qualifying applicant, but they are not exhaustive.

The applicant:

  • Has completed postgraduate studies (master’s or PhD), preferably in a field related to the University’s activities, recently (within two years of application) or is currently enrolled in such programs.
  • Is under 32 years old and, at the time of application, a minor.
  • Must not have worked in a relevant position for more than five years.
  • Possesses native or advanced proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Possesses outstanding research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Able to build and preserve fruitful working connections with people of different backgrounds.
  • Displays originality and resourcefulness when addressing problems.
  • Possessing exceptional computer skills, including a solid grasp of how to utilize Microsoft Office products (a high level of Excel competency and experience with ICT tools are plus).
  • Exhibits a clear interest in the United Nations’ and, more specifically, the United Nations University’s work.
  • Possess a valid English language test, such as the TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC).

Note that this program does not have any nationality limits.

 

Application Date and Process

Applications go through three steps.

Step 1:

The purpose of the initial application phase is to evaluate the applicant’s motivation, background, and suitability for the position based on their credentials. For Stage 1 to continue, the following set of documents needs to be submitted.

Required Documents:

  • Fill out the application form by downloading it.
  • Letter of introduction should not exceed one page, one-sided.
  • No more than two single-sided pages for a resume or CV.
  • two recommendation letters. (Recommendation form)
  • Funding strategy.
  • English language competency certification.

How do I submit the paperwork?

Step 2:

Shortlisted candidates move on to the second step, which is a phone or Zoom interview to learn more about their motives.

Step 3:

During this phase, candidates will be required to finish a task resembling the work they will be doing as fellows.
