The Business Writing and Journalism Excellence Award supports groundbreaking investigative business reporting and professional development for journalists in New Zealand. It funds high-impact investigative projects and offers training or conference support to strengthen business journalism skills.
Investigative Business Writing Stream
Funds ambitious reporting projects capable of breaking major business news.
Stronger chances if proposals include:
Realistic budgets
Employer support (especially for projects over $30,000)
Eligible costs: travel essential to investigation, staffing, forensic/technical expenses, advanced data tools, AI-powered reporting systems, open-source tools.
Professional Development Stream
Supports training and skill-building in business journalism.
Covers short courses, relevant conferences, and targeted training.
Excludes general knowledge-building or unrelated travel.
Applicants must be:
Journalists working for a New Zealand publisher,
Freelancers in New Zealand, or
Journalists overseas working for a NZ publisher.
Must follow NZ Media Council principles, Broadcasting Standards Codebook, and Broadcasting Standards Authority processes.
