About GovAI Research Fellowship
The Research Fellow role is designed for researchers who want to shape the future of AI governance by conducting independent, impactful research. Fellows are expected to help drive forward GovAI’s core research priorities while supervising junior researchers.

- London-based fellows typically receive between £84,000 and £103,500 per year.
- Washington, DC-based fellows typically receive between $134,500 and $170,000 per year.

- Fellows will receive a £5,000 annual wellbeing budget (or equivalent salary uplift for eligible US-based staff).
- A £5,000 annual professional development budget will be provided.

- The fellowship offers flexible working hours.
- Participants will receive extended parental leave.

GovAI Research Fellowship Requirements
- Applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds can apply.
- There are no strict educational requirements for this fellowship.
- Applicants should have several years of relevant research or policy experience.
- Candidates must demonstrate the ability to produce high-quality research.
- Applicants should have expertise in a field related to AI governance.
- They should have broad knowledge of AI governance.
- Applicants must submit a strong research proposal with a clear path to impact.
- Candidates should have a strong interest in positively shaping the future impacts of artificial intelligence.
- Applicants should demonstrate excellent communication, collaboration, and mentoring skills.
- Experience in areas such as public policy, economics, computer science, political science, philosophy, law, cybersecurity, technical governance, or frontier AI safety will be an advantage.
Application Date and Process
The selection process has three stages:
- Written application
- An abstract reasoning assessment
- 1-2 paid remote work tests.
- Candidates who reach this stage will also be asked to produce a detailed research agenda outlining how they would approach their first two years at GovAI
- Some workstreams will require a second paid work test
- Two interviews and reference checks
