About IEG Mainz PhD Fellowship Program

IEG Mainz PhD Fellowship Program 2027 supports PhD researchers in European history with a six- to twelve-month fellowship in Mainz to work on dissertation completion. The IEG Mainz Scholarship provides a stipend, access to institute facilities, and academic mentorship to help advance and finish dissertation chapters.

The fellowship is offered by the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz. Fellows must remain enrolled and supervised at their home university while in residence at the IEG and participate in academic events, colloquia, and present their work during the funded stay.

Benefits of IEG Mainz PhD Fellowship Program

  • Selected PhD fellows get €1,650 a month, access to the institute’s workplace and library, and mentorship from IEG experts.
  • Family allowance: €250 for a partner, €400 for the first child and €100 for each additional child
  • Fellows can rent a reasonably priced room in the institute’s housing and apply for family allowances, subject to availability.
  • Throughout the fellowship, you must reside in Mainz, take part in academic events and weekly colloquia, and give at least one presentation of your work.
  • During the supported term, paid employment and concurrent financial support are prohibited.

IEG Mainz PhD Fellowship Program Requirements

  • All International and German doctoral researchers can apply.
  • While attending the IEG for six to twelve months, you must continue to be enrolled and supervised at your home university.
  • By the deadline, you should typically have spent no more than three years working on your dissertation; exemptions may be considered.
  • Your dissertation should have a developed idea that will benefit from a six- to twelve-month writing term in Mainz, and your source research must already be sufficiently progressed.
  • The research issue, technique, current work, and chapters you plan to finish in Mainz should all be clearly stated in your proposal.
  • For this completion-oriented fellowship, a generic PhD proposal that still primarily focuses on future data collecting might be too early.
  • One letter from your primary PhD supervisor and another from an outside scholar at a different university or in a related field are required.
  • By the deadline, the referees—not the applicant—must send their signed PDF letters straight to [email protected] via email.

Application Date and Process

  • Verify if the European-history research profile of the IEG is appropriate for your dissertation.
  • Choose your strongest language and prepare the application in either German or English.
  • Establish a reasonable writing plan for six to twelve months.
  • Prior to the gateway opening, arrange both academic references.
  • Use the official website to submit the online IEG Mainz PhD fellowship application.
